Kidneys are Bean shaped organs located on both sides of the backbone in the lower part of our back. Kidneys filter blood on a 24x7 basis and in a day may process approx. 200 litres of blood. 

Key functions of Kidneys are :-

  1. Remove extra fluid and waste materials like Urea & Creatinine from the blood stream. 
  2. Excess fluid is removed from the body in form of urine. 
  3. Manage the optimum level of various compounds in the body. 
  4. Release compounds/hormones like 
    1. Erythropoietin - To control the production of red blood cells
    2. Renin - to help in controlling blood pressure levels
    3. Calcitriol - to help the absorption of calcium in the body
